The tragic injury
Of course, life is not always a bed of roses. It has its own ways of throwing lemons at us to catch and either make lemonade, or squeeze our eyes shut at the bitter taste.
The same happened with Kevin Ware when he got severely injured during a game. During the Louisville basketball match on 31st March 2013, Kevin Ware landed awkwardly after scoring a three-pointer which caused his leg to be injured by a compound fracture.
How it happened
In the first half of the game against the Duke, Kevin Ware landed awkwardly attempting to block a shot and score a 3-pointer, that caused him to break his Tibia as his bone burst through his skin. The compound fracture which usually causes a bone to be exposed to open air happened to break into two pieces in Kevin Ware’s case. A low-contact game like basketball usually does not get these types of injuries, which is why Kevin Ware’s injury became an apparent news breaking live show.
What is a compound fracture
If you aren’t cringed enough yet, let us see what a compound fracture is and what harm it can cause to the human body.
In a compound fracture, there in an open wound near the skin of the infected or broken bone. A compound fracture can occur in:
- Collar bone
- Eye bone
- Skull bone
- Face bone
- Spine or vertebra
This injury is usually caused by fatal wounds after a hard impact for example a car accident, contact sport like football, or falling from a height.
A compound fracture is to be immediately dealt with by either surgery or rod insertion. The victim is then advised to take proper medications and treatments as well as bed rest to fully recover.
What happened after the injury?
After immediate care at the courtside, Kevin Ware was rushed to the hospitals where a rod was inserted in his tibia before the 2-hour surgery that was performed. Even though the surgery was a success, the doctors warned Ware of the life-threatening risks the low-contact sport can bring back.
Kevin was told that a compound fracture was nothing to joke about. Any open wound would result in an immediate infection. The infection can cause clots of blood to form at the infection that will first paralyze the body part and then cause death.
Dr. Warlaka said about Ware’s injury,
“I knew how devastating the injury could be physically and how much dedication and focus it was going to take to come back from that drastic injury.”
After the surgery, Dr. Oware said,
“Although Ware has a long road to being able to play again, I was confident he would make a full recovery.”
Is Kevin Ware playing now?
Kevin Ware sure was devastated after his injury, but he did not let this moment define his career and passion. He is still playing for the national team and his inspirational story has become an example not only for sportsmen, but also for those who are struggling to keep up with life.
Kevin Ware played in the seasons of 2016, 2017, 2018, and tried out for the NBA team despite his delicate condition. Everyone knew how risky it was for him to play in court but Kevin didn’t think much of it. All he knew was that he loved basketball and that was it.
When life throws thorns your way, don’t dodge them, don’t run from them, and don’t let them scar you. A wound is acceptable as long as you let it heal. While picking out the thorns, think about the beautiful roses that bloom above them.
