Why does my blood smell like metal?

Everything has its odor and taste, because of the different chemistry every substance has. We know that atoms make up every matter and material in the world. The different compositions and concentrations it forms cause the substance to have its unique characteristic. But why does my blood smell like metal?

Applying that rule to every being and matter-made substance in the world, coins, brass, and even silver leave a lingering odor on your fingers after every touch. This odor is what we relate matter with, and not the other way around.

In addition to these common things, even our blood smells like metal. Read to find out.

The composition of blood

When we break down the composition of blood, we find plasma, red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets running within this rapidly flowing body fluid.

If we further break down the elements that make up blood, we will find a mixture of

  • Water
  • Sugar
  • Fat
  • Proteins
  • Salt

In the plasma element. By decomposing red blood cells and white blood cells, we find

  • Erythropoietin
  • Neutrophil

And every other element has its own decomposition.

The composition of metal

Metals are elements in their own that are usually not broken down. Having a group in the periodic table, metals main comprise of:

  • Zinc
  • Copper
  • Brass
  • Silicon
  • Titanium
  • Tungsten
  • Nickel etc.

That is about it for the decomposition of metals and blood. From what we have read so far, neither blood nor metal contain something we can label as the cause of the metallic blood odor. In fact, blood and metal have nothing in common with each other. Then what on earth causes our blood to smell that way?

The metallic odor of blood

Scientists have revealed that blood contains trans-4, 5-epoxy-(E)-2-decenal compound that gives the blood its metallic odor. In addition to that, the 1-octen-3-one that is present in a large amount in our blood also contribute to this odor. What is more, this is not only found in blood, but also in human sweat.

Also, the 1-octen-3-one also gives fragrance to toiletries and food colorings that we use in our daily lives. In short, metallic odor is among the most commonly smelt fragrances present in our human world.

A few other reasons

Other than the obvious reason of 1-octen-3-one and trans-4, 5-epoxy-(E)-2-decenal compound already present in our blood, a few scientists also believe metallic substances to be present in our body that cause this smell. The ranges and mean plasma levels in which these metals are present in human blood are:

  • Magnesium: 12.5 to 36.0, and
  • Chromium: 0.009 to 0.055, and 0.027,
  • Nickel: 0 to 0.27, and 0.060,
  • Copper: 0.050 to 1.93, and 1.03,
  • Zinc: 0.49 to 7.70, and 3.01

Other than that, iron is said to be largely present in our blood. In fact, iron plays a vital role in our health system. You may notice your blood level going down with a deficiency of iron. While normal iron range known as Hemoglobin level is said to be between 12-15, doctors advise to consume pomegranates, cherries, red apples, and red fruits in case the blood level goes below 9. Remember though, never let your blood level fall below 4, as that will cause a serious risk to your health.

A few other reasons may include:

Exposure to metal

Depending upon your daily lifestyle, you may inhale a certain amount of metal exhaust inside you. While this exhaust doesn’t readily mix with the blood composition, it can alter your blood odor to some extent, giving it a metallic smell.

Different medications

If you are on medication (high or low doze), the medicine compound will affect your natural system as you are providing an outside health insurance. It is better to consume natural remedies rather than heavy antibiotics unless necessary to avoid this alteration.

Different phases of life

If you are a pregnant woman, your blood composition will surely change. You are providing for two bodies rather than one, and that is sure to cause change in blood smell.

Also, young blood isn’t as affected by outdoor activities as old blood is, which also indicates age being an important factor.

Various diseases

One of the biggest diseases that has a direct effect on our body composition is blood cancer. An incurable disease caused by blood, which will ensure change in color and smell to metallic or any other odor.

A hidden secret revealed

You know when you hold a coin and rub it in your hands? What happens after you drop it? Your hands smell like metal, right? What do you do? Blame the coin for the odor it gave your hands.

Surprise surprise! That odor is actually your hands’ and not the coins. The metal coin and your hands cause a reaction that cause the metallic fragrance you smell. What happens is the oils in your body decompose at the metallic touch which causes the smell.

Just like you cannot blame a coin for the harmless smell which is actually you, think twice before blaming someone else as well.

Conclusion

The metallic odor you smell in your blood is not only your blood, but also in your sweat and your breath. What is more, the human body is made of different metals and so is the world we breathe in every day. Most of the smells of this world are metallic, so it is no surprise our blood smells the same.
